At the end of the day we’re here to make a tasty beverage. It will be the first vintage of Rio Vista Pinot Noir for usīut it’s funny how you start to think some vineyards are just maybe not as distinctive or unique, for whatever reason, and get your head turned around like we did with Rio Vista. Planted in 1999, Larner Vineyard is situated amongst the beautiful rolling hills of Ballard Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley. We strive to remove the winemaker’s signature, allowing the voice of the vineyard to be the overriding expression. Rita Hills vineyards in Santa Barbara County. But in 2018 iit was a real standout so we made a last minute decision to pull two of the best barrels aside and do a small 50-case lot or Rio Vista single vineyard Pinot Noir just for the wine club and for our tasting room customers. Rita Hills Pinot Noir Brewer-Clifton’s Pinot Noirs encompass the true essence of our Sta. And it’s been a major component for our Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir in the last couple vintages. Aged in 10 new French oak barrels, the wine shows off the warm vintage that was, with ripe fruit sets and a long. So even though it’s in a warmer site on the east end of Santa Rita, it still ripens really slow. It’s not our latest pinot pick but it’s close. When it was created in July 2001, the AVA was officially known as Santa Rita Hills, but following protests from the large Chilean wine company Vina Santa Rita, it was abbreviated to Sta. Today, the AVA stands at approximately 14,000 hectares (36,000 acres), after its original boundaries were extended by 930ha (2296 acres) in 2016 following a ruling by the TTB, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. These poor, free-draining soils, in combination with the region's low annual rainfall, also imbue the wines of Sta. Marine deposits are also widely found, giving the wines noticeable minerality and salinity. Rita Hills are in the main formed of loams: sandy loams, silt loams and clay loams. This iconic vineyard now contains the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Santa Barbara County.

Rita Hills's growing season, giving its grapes extra time to develop full phenolic ripeness. The combined effects of the ocean breezes and fog significantly extend Sta. Fog also acts as a climatic moderator, lowering the temperatures during the hot summer months. However, rather than seeing an increase in temperature as a result, the region's strong maritime influences keep daytime temperatures here within bearable limits. Rita Hills lies closer to the equator than any European wine region.
